A very aromatic butter-cheese-honey caramelized gratin melted on top of a thick toast. Although this was an utmost unhealthy way of eating a toast, the aroma and taste would just make me forget about those rules of healthy eating 😀🌻
The toast prepared in a built-in oven (above photo) has a more even browning than the toast baked in an oven toaster (below photo) 🍞
Yield: 4 thick slices of toasts
Ingredients
50g cheddar cheese slice, about 3 slices50g whipping cream
30g unsalted butter
10g honey
5g fine sugar
4 thick slices of bread
Directions
1.Cut bread into 1.5 to 2 cm thick.2. Tear cheddar cheese slices into smaller pieces. Combine the cheddar cheese, whipping cream and butter in a heat-resistant bowl.
You can either melt the cheese in a rice cooker or over a water-bath.
Using a rice cooker
Turn on the "Keep Warm" mode for 15 minutes, then turn off. Let the ingredients sit in the rice cooker for another 10 to 15 minutes. Give the ingredients a few stirs after the first 15 minutes of keeping warm to facilitate the cheese to melt.
After first 15 minutes of heating.
After the second 15 minutes of heating.
After the stirring, the butter-cheese mixture should look homogeneous and thick.
For using a water-bath
Stir the melted butter, cheese and whipping cream till well-combined.
3. Remove the bowl from either the rice cooker or water bath. Stir in the sugar and honey till well-combined.
Let the cheese mixture cool down slightly (about 10 to 15 minutes) before applying on the toast.
The cheese mixture using rice cooker would cool down faster than the one prepared using a water bath.
4. Pour the cheese mixture over the toast and spread out using a spatula.
If the cheese mixture becomes too thick to apply, warm it either in a rice cooker or over a water-bath.
For baking in a toaster, elevate the bread using a small cooling stand, or line with a few layers of parchment paper. This is to protect the base of the bread from over-browning.
For baking in an oven, just line the baking tray with parchment paper.
6. Bake at 170°C for about 10 to 15 minutes, or till the cheese gratin has become golden.
Stand next to your toaster or oven to keep a close watch to prevent the cheese from over browning.

Baking in an oven
Bake at the upper rack of a preheated oven, 170°C for about 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes into baking, turn the baking tray to give a more even browning of the cheese. Turn off the oven, and keep the toast in the oven for about 2 minutes before transferring out.
